Is there any Piano Recital?

Annual Piano Recital at least once per year. Performing is an important skill for any pianist.  Despite the hard work involved, in the long run, the students find it a rewarding activity.

What kind of piano should I purchase?

• A piano, either acoustic or digital, is the ideal instrument on which to progress
• If the above is not practical initially, then a touch-sensitive keyboard will meet the needs of the first year of learning.

What is the Parent's Role?

Parental attendance at lessons and supervision of at-home practice has enormous benefits to both children and parents.

Parental attendance helps children understand that learning to play the piano is valued and important to their parents, giving children greater incentive to learn and practice.

By observing weekly lessons, parents know what and how their children are supposed to practice at home. Parents can learn to play some of the songs along with their children for their own enjoyment and to better assist with at-home practice.

Parents can assist and encourage their children with at-home practice in many ways: scheduling a regular time for practice, making sure children practice everything in their assignment book (as well as simply exploring and having fun), listening to their children play (without criticism) and having informal concerts for family or friends.

For best results, parents need to supervise children while they practice because children will not practice correctly on their own.

Why do an exam?

The Royal Conservatory of Music offers examinations at all levels as an integral part of our renowned system of study. This is because examinations:

  • provide students with a challenge to prepare for and overcome

  • help students to set goals and round out their musical knowledge.

  • are a great way for them to show off student progression and achievements and a wonderful way to celebrate student success along their music journey

Students who take exams see additional benefits, both in their daily lives and in their music training. Here are a few examples:

  • Eligible to win Gold Medal awards from The Royal Conservatory.

  • Many high schools recognize The Royal Conservatory examinations for credit toward graduation.

  • An accredited examiner from the RCM's College of Examiners provides objective feedback and comments which can be valuable in developing the student’s skills.

  • Students who participate in The Royal Conservatory examinations tend to become more dedicated to their instrument and practice more often.

  • Achievement in The Royal Conservatory examinations is an impressive addition to any resume. More than just sharing individual’s musical accomplishments, it is indicative of their creativity, a willingness to learn, an ability to set both short and long-term goals, and a commitment to achieving difficult tasks.

I encourage all my students to take examinations to challenge themselves and help build their confidence!
